Alexander Millar

Alexander Millar is a Scottish artist and was born in the small mining village of Springside, North Ayrshire where he spent his childhood enveloped in scenes more fitting for the 1940’s rather than the 1960’s.

He states that his early years were “spent in the company of old men dressed in dark suits partnered with large missile-shaped women decked out in headscarves and pinnies.” These characters became the archetypes that Millar is synonymous with today, not only in appearance but with the old-fashioned values they have come to represent. Contemplating his work recalls to a time where emphasis on the importance of emotional wealth and not financial was at the forefront of many working-class families.

Millar now resides in North-East England, an area which also witnessed the glory and eventual decline of the mining industry. In recent years he severed ties with a prominent publishing company and has gained the freedom to creatively express himself through his work once again.

His depictions of his childhood experiences resonate with the fading communities that once lived that life, while also standing as testament to future generations
